Irani: An Early Agreement to Provide Jordan with Additional Quantities of Egyptian Gas.


Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Khaled Irani said Wednesday that Jordan will sign a trade agreement with Egypt, in the next two weeks to provide him with additional quantities of natural gas to the gas distribution project for homes and businesses and industry in Amman and Zarqa through a network of pipes.

He said in a press conference, it will supply Jordan with about half a billion cubic meters of gas annually from the cities, and there are negotiations for the same amount of commercial and industrial facilities.

For the implementation of the project, said Irani that according to the schedule is expected to build a main line feeders of the network and the distribution of natural gas in the first residential area in Amman in 2013.

Jordan looks forward to import from Egypt about 240 million cubic feet of gas per day according to the original contract to raise the amount to 330 million according to the contract overtime. With regard to the pace of implementation of the project, said Minister of Energy «in the event of completion of contractual arrangements with the Egyptian side regarding the quantities will be completing the work with the dawn of Jordan - Egypt on offer on the processing and signing of the agreements and the establishment of the project company and then by the company at dawn to work to provide financing of the project and to begin implementing the gas distribution network ».

The project includes the establishment of a network for the distribution of natural gas by pipeline to about 280 000 houses and about four thousands of a business and the industrial cities of Amman and Zarqa.

Irani said that the two sides of Jordan and Egypt and through the Ministries of Energy and Petroleum in the two countries are discussing in Cairo, currently special arrangements to provide the quantities of gas required for the project, noting that the approval of the Egyptian is part of an agreement reached during the meeting of the Higher Jordanian-Egyptian joint meeting in Cairo the month of October 2009. He said that additional amounts will increase investment in the establishment of power plants that rely on gas in the Kingdom.

He explained that Irani"s late Egyptian side, during the last period to provide the Kingdom"s gas needs a purely technical issue related to maintenance operations in the fields of the Chairperson, and there is no political pressure on Jordan in this aspect as indicated for some of the media.

He noted that Jordan would soon host a meeting of members of the Arab Gas Pipeline is a thorough discussion of a number of issues and constraints they face in this area.

Jordan tends to import gas from other sources, said Irani that the Jordanian team would soon travel to Qatar to discuss the import of Qatari gas quantities, in addition to many other options such as Algeria.

On the power cuts experienced in some parts of the Kingdom, said the Irania that only two cuts had a direct relationship to increase electrical loads as a result of the heat wave, but the rest of the outages were technical reasons for the electricity companies.

He stressed on ability to meet the electrical loads, adding that the ministry implemented a number of generation projects to cope with the huge loads of future developments.

He noted that with the end of the year will the number of units up to 500 MW and therefore there will be no problems regarding the ability of the electrical system to meet the loads.

The official figures indicate that the ability of obstetric Jordan of 2600 mega watts, which now have 2475 mega watts.
